Scripture teaches that we are to give a tithe, 10% of our income, to God’s work. This can be a challenge. Many of us happily give what is left over in our wallets at the end of the week or what we think we can afford, however God calls us to consider our financial investment in the church as a part of growing in our faith journey. If a tithe, 10%, seems like a lot to you, you are not alone. We each wrestle with our fear of whether or not we are able to provide for our families, or maintain the kind of lifestyle we desire. However, the challenge to begin to tithe remains before us.
What I mean is this: the one who sows a small number of seeds will also reap a small crop, and the one who sows a generous amount of seeds will also reap a generous crop. 2 Corinthians 9:6.
What kind of farmer keeps all of the seeds in the barn because they are afraid of losing their seeds? A farmer recognizes that, in order to produce in abundance, he or she has to invest significantly in what they can’t see. He or she has to be willing to risk their seed in order to reap a harvest.
The same is true in our lives of faith. As God gives generously to us, we are called to give generously to others. How do you invest what you have given so that God can do good things in the world around you?
If you have never considered tithing, giving 10% of your income, we encourage you to give it a try. For just one month, give 10% of what you have away to God’s work in the church. In our experience, after you’ve sampled this way of faithful living, the fear you thought you had about relying on God’s provision is replaced with a joyous faith of how much God can do through you.
